American International School CERN Team Short-Listed for Top Prize in International Physics Competition
The American International School in Cyprus is proud to announce that their CERN Club students participated in and were short-listed in the 2018 Beamline for Schools competition. Beamline for Schools is an international competition for high school students, organized by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland. Teams of physics students and teachers from around the world were invited to propose an idea for an experiment that can be conducted using a CERN accelerator beam. The first prize for the top two teams is a trip to CERN to carry out their experiments in a fully-equipped accelerator beamline.
The AISC CERN club, GyrosScope, placed in the top 30 teams out of 195 proposals by teams from 42 different countries from around the world. The GyrosScope team consists of AISC students, Mandalena Miltiadi, grade 11, Chenxin Shen, grade 11, Michael Tzevelekos, grade 11, Nadav Brochstein, grade 9, and Maria Tzevelekos, grade 9. GyrosScope is the first team from Cyprus to participate in the Beamline for Schools competition. Their topic was “Investigating Artwork Using Accelerating Particles.” Due to their standing in the top 30 Beamline teams, Team GyrosScope and AISC will receive a cosmic pi detector to be used to detect and analyze cosmic rays, further enriching the School’s Physics program. Additionally, each team member will look forward to receiving a Beamline t-shirt and a certificate of participation.
The team was supervised and coached by AISC Math and Physics Teacher, Mr. Avgoustinos Tsaousis. Mr. Tsaousis was a participant in the 2017 CERN High School Physics Teacher Programme, established to promote the study of particle physics in high school programs and to facilitate the exchange of knowledge among international physics educators. AISC is proud of Team GyrosScope and looks forward to a continued relationship with CERN in the years to come.
